So after watching Byron Hurt’s Soul Food Junkies…I think I will be giving up red meat and pork. I don’t consume either one of those in large amounts, but watching this documentary made me question whether I needed them in my life at all.
Soul Food Junkies does a thorough examination of the origins of soul food and it’s effect on black people. African Americans have been disproportionately effected by preventable diseases that are the results of poor eating habits. However, instead of placing all the blame on soul food the documentary also takes a look at food deserts (areas of a city that are predominately black or minority and lower income that lack grocery stores with fresh food and other healthy eating options) as well as processed food.
Whether you eat soul food or not, this doc will definitely make you think about your food choices.
