REVIEW: CHISHOLM '72: UNBOUGHT AND UNBOSSED

While waiting for Free Angela and All Political Prisoners to come my town, I decided to check out another Shola Lynch documentary…Chisholm ‘72: Unbought and Unbossed. If you don’t know who Shirley Chisholm is please go educate yourself now. She was the first African American woman elected to Congress and one of the first women to seriously seek the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. Needless to say, Chisholm was truly ahead of her time.

Chisholm '72 traces her path towards the presidential nomination. She faced opposition because she was black and a woman…two things that you weren’t suppose to be if you wanted to be President of the United States. Of course, she didn’t get the nomination, but she not only shook things up…she paved the way for change. As a country we have a long way to go until we can can sufficiently separate gender and race from someone’s intelligence, qualifications, etc. But Chisholm’s story gives me hope and courage.
