This weekend we lost culinary anthropologist/griot, Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor. Smart-Grosvenor is most notably known for openly embracing her Geechee Gullah heritage through her many culinary creations.
Filmmaker, Julie Dash, is in the process of releasing the above documentary, Travel Notes of a Geechee Girl, a film that explores the life of Smart-Grosvenor as well as her collaborations with musicians, artists and writers from the Beat Literary Movement, Black Arts-Black Power Movements, New Black Cinema, and her legendary Food as Cultural Memory broadcasts on NPR.
Rest in Peace Vertamae.
