I grew up listening to hip-hop. At one point, every CD I owned was a rap CD. Fast-forward to today, I hardly ever listen to rap or buy rap CDs. That’s simply because majority of the rappers on the radio today aren’t in it for the art, they’re just in it for money and it shows. Watching this documentary was a breath of fresh air and made me remember why I love rap music so much.
Directed and produced by Ice-T, Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap, explores the craft and art form of MC-ing. Ice-T interviews a plethora of masters of this art form about their processes and their love for the music.
This was a well-crafted documentary. I love when directors use the city as an essential part of the stories they’re telling, not just a backdrop.
The only thing that I would have asked for is the presence of more female MCs as well as more representation from the South.
